What Is an IBC Cage Frame?

The cage frame is the tubular steel exoskeleton that surrounds the HDPE inner bottle of an IBC tote. It provides structural support during stacking, transport, and filling, and protects the plastic bottle from impact damage. A standard IBC cage frame consists of vertical uprights, horizontal rails, corner brackets, and a top fill frame that secures the lid opening.

Over time, cage frames can sustain damage from forklift impacts, corrosion, overloading, or general wear. A compromised cage frame weakens the entire container and can lead to bottle bulging, stacking failures, and safety hazards. Replacing or repairing the cage frame is often more economical than replacing the entire IBC tote.

Materials and Construction

Our replacement cage frames are manufactured from high-strength tubular steel with protective surface treatments to resist corrosion and extend service life.

Galvanized Steel

Hot-dip galvanized cage frames offer superior corrosion resistance for outdoor storage and environments with high humidity or chemical exposure. The zinc coating provides sacrificial protection that prevents rust even when the surface is scratched.

Powder-Coated Steel

Powder-coated cage frames provide a durable, chip-resistant finish in a range of colors. Commonly used for indoor storage and applications where appearance matters. The coating resists UV degradation and mild chemical exposure.

Carbon Steel (Painted)

Standard painted carbon steel cage frames are the most economical option. Suitable for indoor use and dry environments where corrosion risk is minimal. Available with primer and topcoat finish.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel cage frames are available for pharmaceutical, food processing, and highly corrosive environments. 304 and 316 grades provide maximum chemical resistance and sanitary compliance.

Repair vs. Replace

Not every damaged cage frame needs full replacement. Our technicians can assess your cages and recommend the most cost-effective solution.

When to Repair

  • One or two bent uprights or rails
  • Minor surface rust without structural compromise
  • Damaged corner brackets that can be re-welded
  • Loose or missing top frame bolts
  • Small dents that do not affect stacking stability

When to Replace

  • Multiple bent or broken uprights
  • Severe rust with metal thinning or holes
  • Warped frame that no longer sits flush on the pallet
  • Cracked welds at multiple joints
  • Cage deformation causing bottle bulging or leaks

Cage repairs typically cost 30-50% less than a full replacement and can be completed at our Nashville facility or on-site for large fleet orders. We carry individual cage components including uprights, horizontal rails, corner brackets, top frames, and fastener kits for field repairs.

Compatibility

IBC cage frames are not universally interchangeable. Frame dimensions, bolt patterns, and pallet attachment points vary between manufacturers. We stock replacement frames compatible with the following brands:

  • Schutz: MX, EX, and SX series
  • Mauser: SM and NCG series
  • Greif: IBC 275 and IBC 330 models
  • Hoover: Standard and custom configurations
  • Snyder / Bonar: Composite and steel pallet models

If you are unsure which cage frame fits your tote, send us the manufacturer name, model number, and a photo of the data plate. We will match the correct replacement frame and confirm compatibility before shipping.
