Fill Opening & Lid Options
6-Inch Screw Cap
The standard fill opening on most 275 gallon IBC totes. The 6-inch (150mm) threaded cap provides a secure, leak-proof seal. Includes a vented cap option for pressure equalization during dispensing. Compatible with most standard IBC fill adapters.
8-Inch Screw Cap
A larger fill opening that allows easier cleaning access and faster filling. The 8-inch (200mm) opening is preferred for viscous liquids, food-grade applications where internal inspection is required, and any process that benefits from wider access to the interior.
Open Top / Full Lid
Some 275 gallon IBC totes are available with a fully removable top lid, providing complete access to the interior. This configuration is ideal for solid or semi-solid contents, mixing operations, and applications where the tote needs to be loaded from the top with equipment.
Pallet Base Types
| Pallet Type | Material | Weight | Benefits | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel Pallet | Galvanized steel tubing | ~45 lbs | Highly durable, fire-resistant, long lifespan, repairable | Heavier, can rust without coating, higher cost |
| Composite Pallet | HDPE / wood / fiberglass blend | ~30 lbs | Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, lower cost | Less durable under heavy loads, not repairable |
| Wooden Pallet | Heat-treated hardwood | ~35 lbs | Low cost, widely available, repairable | Absorbs moisture, shorter lifespan, pest risk |
| Plastic Pallet | Injection-molded HDPE | ~25 lbs | Lightest option, chemical-resistant, hygienic | Lower load capacity, not repairable |
Materials & Build Quality
The 275 gallon IBC tote is engineered for durability, chemical resistance, and safe handling of a wide range of liquids. Here is a detailed look at the construction.
HDPE Inner Bottle
The inner container is blow-molded from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), a food-safe, UV-resistant, and chemically inert plastic. HDPE provides excellent resistance to acids, bases, alcohols, and many solvents. The bottle wall thickness ranges from 2.0 to 3.0 mm depending on the manufacturer and intended use.
HDPE is rated for continuous use between -40°F and 140°F (-40°C to 60°C). For higher temperature applications, specialized bottles with enhanced thermal ratings are available but uncommon in the used market.
Galvanized Steel Cage
The tubular steel cage surrounds the HDPE bottle and provides structural support, impact protection, and stackability. The cage is typically made from galvanized steel wire with a diameter of 4.5 to 6.0 mm, welded into a grid pattern. The galvanization protects against rust and corrosion.
The cage includes lifting bars at the top corners for crane handling and integrates with the pallet base through a locking mechanism that secures the bottle in place during transport and stacking.
Gaskets and Seals
All sealing surfaces use EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) gaskets as standard. For chemical applications requiring enhanced resistance, Viton or PTFE gaskets are available. The lid gasket and valve gasket are the two primary sealing points and should be inspected regularly for wear.
Stackability & Compatibility
The 275 gallon IBC tote is designed for efficient storage, handling, and interoperability with standard logistics infrastructure.
Stacking
When full, 275 gallon IBC totes can be safely stacked up to 3 units high, depending on the manufacturer and condition. The top frame of each tote interlocks with the pallet base of the unit above it, preventing lateral movement. Always verify stacking compatibility when mixing brands, as locking mechanisms vary slightly between manufacturers.
When empty, totes can typically be stacked 4-5 high for efficient storage and transport. Nesting is not possible with IBC totes due to the rigid cage structure.
Forklift and Pallet Jack Access
All 275 gallon IBC totes feature 4-way forklift entry on the pallet base, allowing access from any side. The fork pocket dimensions are standard: approximately 3.5" high x 7.5" wide. The pallet base is also compatible with standard pallet jacks for ground-level handling.
Shipping and Transport
The 48" x 40" footprint is designed to maximize trailer utilization. A standard 53-foot trailer can fit 20 IBC totes on a single level (5 rows of 4, or 10 rows of 2). With the 46" height, double-stacking is possible in standard trailers with a 110" interior height, allowing up to 40 totes per trailer load.
Regulatory Compliance
275 gallon IBC totes are manufactured and tested in accordance with UN 31HA1 standards for the transport of hazardous materials. The UN marking on each tote indicates the performance level, specific gravity rating, and hydraulic test pressure. Used totes retain their UN certification for 5 years from the date of manufacture, after which they must be recertified or downgraded to non-hazmat use.
