Valve Types & Discharge Options

2" Butterfly Valve

The most common valve on 330 gallon IBC totes. The butterfly valve uses a rotating disc to control flow, providing quick open/close operation and reliable sealing. The 2-inch (DN50) connection is the industry standard and compatible with most hose fittings, adapters, and dispensing equipment.

Flow rate: Up to 50 GPM depending on head pressure and viscosity.

2" Ball Valve

Ball valves provide a full-bore opening for maximum flow and minimal pressure drop. The quarter-turn operation makes them easy to use, and the tight seal makes them ideal for chemical handling applications. Ball valves are preferred when precise flow control and leak prevention are critical.

Best for: Chemicals, solvents, and applications requiring zero-leak performance.

Configuration

Fill Opening & Pallet Options

Fill Opening Options

The 330 gallon IBC tote is available with 6-inch (150mm) or 8-inch (200mm) threaded fill openings. The 8-inch opening is more common on 330 gallon models than on 275 gallon models, as the larger capacity totes are frequently used for viscous liquids and food-grade applications where wider access is preferred.

Vented caps are available for both sizes, allowing air ingress during dispensing to prevent vacuum lock and ensure smooth, consistent flow from the bottom valve. For pressure-sensitive contents, non-vented caps with EPDM or Viton gaskets provide a sealed environment.

Pallet Base Options

The 330 gallon IBC tote is available with steel, composite, wooden, or plastic pallet bases. Steel pallets are the most common for 330 gallon totes due to the higher gross weight when full. The steel base provides superior durability and load-bearing capacity, essential when the container weighs over 2,600 lbs fully loaded.

Composite pallets are also popular for the 330 gallon size, offering a good balance between weight savings and structural integrity. Wooden pallets are available but less common for 330 gallon totes due to moisture absorption and shorter lifespan concerns.

Gaskets and Seals

Standard EPDM gaskets are included on the lid and valve. For food-grade applications, FDA-compliant EPDM or silicone gaskets are available. For chemical compatibility, Viton and PTFE gasket options provide resistance to a broader range of aggressive chemicals, solvents, and fuels.

Construction

Materials & Build Details

The 330 gallon IBC tote is built with heavier-gauge materials compared to the 275 gallon model, reflecting its higher capacity and gross weight requirements.

HDPE Inner Bottle

The inner container is blow-molded from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with a wall thickness of 2.5 to 3.5 mm. The thicker walls compared to the 275 gallon model accommodate the increased hydrostatic pressure from the taller liquid column. The HDPE is FDA-compliant for food-contact applications and offers broad chemical compatibility.

Operating temperature range is -40°F to 140°F (-40°C to 60°C). UV stabilizers are added during manufacturing to protect against degradation from sunlight exposure, though prolonged outdoor storage should include additional UV protection or shading.

Steel Cage Assembly

The galvanized steel cage on 330 gallon totes uses heavier wire (5.0 - 6.5 mm diameter) compared to the 275 gallon model. The taller cage structure includes additional horizontal support bars to maintain rigidity at the greater height. The cage provides crush protection, impact resistance, and the structural framework for stacking.

Stackability

The 330 gallon IBC tote can be safely stacked 2 high when fully loaded. The reduced stack height compared to the 275 gallon model (3 high) is due to the greater gross weight per unit. When empty, 330 gallon totes can be stacked 3-4 high for storage and transport. Always verify stacking compatibility when mixing manufacturers.

Applications

Common Uses for 330 Gallon IBC Totes

Food & Beverage

The 330 gallon size is the industry preference for food-grade liquids. Used extensively for syrups, juice concentrates, cooking oils, vinegar, liquid sweeteners, flavoring compounds, and beverage bases.

Chemical Processing

Industrial chemicals, cleaning solutions, solvents, antifreeze, coolants, and process chemicals. The larger volume reduces the number of container changes during production runs.

Pharmaceutical

Excipients, purified water, buffer solutions, and pharmaceutical-grade ingredients. The 330 gallon size aligns with common batch sizes in pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Bulk Water Storage

Large-scale rain harvesting, emergency preparedness water reserves, construction site water supply, and agricultural irrigation systems where maximum volume per container is needed.

Paint & Coatings

Latex paint, industrial coatings, stains, sealants, and adhesive compounds. The wider fill opening available on 330 gallon totes makes loading viscous products easier.

Fuel & Lubricants

Diesel fuel, biodiesel, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, and transmission fluid storage. Always verify that the tote is rated for the specific fuel type and meets local fire code requirements.

Industries

Industries That Prefer 330 Gallon IBC Totes

While both 275 and 330 gallon totes are widely used, certain industries show a strong preference for the 330 gallon size due to batch size alignment, volume efficiency, and industry standardization.

  • Food and beverage manufacturing (dominant preference)
  • Pharmaceutical production
  • Chemical blending and distribution
  • Paint and coatings manufacturing
  • Cosmetics and personal care products
  • Cleaning product formulation
  • Wine and spirits production
  • Fuel distribution and storage
  • Water treatment facilities
  • Industrial adhesive and sealant production
